ATHLETICS
N.Z. ASSN. DECISIONS. P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov.'2B. The New Zealand Amatuer Athletic Association has decided not to hold New Zealand senior championships next year. Junior and women’s championships will be held in Otago on March 4. The junior crosscountry championship will also oe held next year over a three-mne course.
At its meeting the Association decided to recommend to the Management Committee that the question of affiliation with the New Zealand Council of Sport be deterred for discussion at next annual meeting. It was decided that the Management Committee should co-operate with the Director of Physical Education, Mr. P. A. Smithells, ana Rev. Father T. Cleary, in preparing standards for schoolboys’ events. The meeting decided to adhere to the rule that applications for the recognition of records must reach the secretary of the Association within thirty days of the event. Auckland s application for’ recognition as New Zealand record of W. Heron’s pole vault of 11 feet i inch was rejected under this rule. - Mr C. W. Clark (Otago) was elected president of the Association and H. I. Austad (Wellington) was elected chairman of the Managemen. Committee. n The matter of inadequate playing areas and lack of sports equipment for schools was discussed, and it was decided to take the matter up with the appropriate authority. Cases were quoted' of an intermediate school in Auckland and a technical school in Dunedin where there were practically no facilities for sport.. It was recognised that the Education Department did make an effort to lay out grounds, but it was stated that what was needed was permanent sports equipment, the provision of which would probably have to wait until after the war.
