Allwright, Stationmaster at Wellington since 1940, has retired after 42 years’ service with the rcailways Department. He is to be succeeded by Mr. A. W. Jackson, stationmaster at Tauranga.

A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mrs W. H. Parfitt was passed by the Greymouth. Borough Council at its meeting on Thursday evening. The Mayor (Mr F. A. kitchingham) referred to the magnificent work Mrs Parfitt had done while Mr Parfitt was Mayor.

The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. Hugh F. Duggan, aged 58, and a native of Australia. He worked in quartz mines on the Inanganua field. He suffered from miner’s phthisis and moved to Christchurch some years ago. He is survived by his widow, one son, Edward, and three daughters. Mr. aiid Mrs. T. Crankshaw, of Greymouth, have received actvice that their son. Pilot Officer Ken Cranxshaw, D.F.M., has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Fnot Officer Crankshaw. who has been serving overseas with the R.N.Z.A.F. for the past three years, is at present attached to No. 75 Bomber Squadron.

A tribute to the memory of the late Bishop Brodie was paid by the Greymouth Borough Council at its meeting on Thursday evening. The Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham) said that Bishop Brodie had taken an intense interest in all human problems. The community was the poorer for his passing.
