LAW CHIEFS INSTRUCTED. (Rec. 5.5.) LONDON, Oct. 20. After Hitler’s talk with German leaders yesterday, another significant conference was held in Berlin, ine German Official News Agency says: Doctor Otto Thierack, Minister, of Justice, addressed Nazi Law Chiefs, including the Presidents of the highest Courts, on the importance of the administration of the law for the morale and maintenance of the home front in total war.” () The London “Daily Express comments’ “This report is undoubtedly the most outspoken one ever sent from Berlin about the German fortress.” GERMAN COUNCIL OF WAR LONDON, Oct. 20. Berlin announced a conference between Hitler and leading Nazi Party and High Command members. the Berlin radio revealed that the conference was called by Marshal Keitel* ’ Mr Ward Price, writing in the “Mail” says: It is likely the meeting was called independently of Hitler, and presumably in a spirit of disagreement with his policy. Mr Ward Price adds: This may prove one ot the most important pieces of news from Germany for a long time. Such a meeting has never before been held. German generals, so far, .have been required to keep out of politics, taking their directions from Hitler. The conclusion drawn in London is that Hitler is losing his influence over his Army and political leaders. FEWER GERMAN GENERALS. SUPPORTING HITLER’S' STRATEGY LONDON, Oct. 20. The “Daily, Mail’s” Geneva correspondent says: “It is considered significant that the Germans chose to announce the full gravity of their situation on the day after Hitlers conference with Reich leaders. it is reported that the number of the German Generals who are supporting Hitler’s “grand strategy" is rapidly dwindling. An overwhelming majority of Generals demand; that the army should cut losses in Russia before it becomes too late. They fear that the alternative is a military disasteron a scale dwarfing the annihilation of the Sixth Army at Stalingrad. A similar split is observable in the Luftwaffe, and the Navy.” GERMAN PRESS. PAINTS BLACK PICTURE. (Rec. 8.45.) LONDON, Oct. 20. The “Daily Express’s” Stockholm correspondent says: German newspapers have never before been allowed to paint so black a picture of the war situation. An article in the “Mulhauster Tageblatt” complains that a wave of defeatism is sweeping over Germany. It says: “Never before in her history has Germany been so rich in little Bismarcks and little Mottkes. One meets them at every street corner and cafe, discussing the military situation. They are convinced that we are radically beaten. It is evident that when the whole German people prefer negative criticism to collaborating for victory, the danger of losing the war will certainly have become immense.”
