lOur Own Correspondent.] HOKITIKA, Oct. 20. Mr. O. J. Hutchison presided at the meeting of the Hokitika branch of the Returned Services’ Association. Apologies were received from the President, Mr. F. J. Ferham, and Messrs K. Wallace, J. Andrews and R. Paterson. It was reported that local membership stood at 225 and that the re-union showed a loss. The Chairman explained that this was to be expected. The Secretary was instructed to communicate with Headquarters regarding the stoppage of a wife’s •’ allotment, after she had been directed into a position and was supporting herself. It was also resolved to forward a remit to Headquarters protesting against any deductions being made in economic pensions and | age benefits through payments beiing received from friendly societ.es. a I tender for painting from Scott and Co. was accepted. It was stated that Hie library had been put in good order and soldiers would be asked to return any books as soon as possible. Messrs Wells and Stuart were appointed hospital visitors for the month. It was decided to call a meeting the following evening to form a branch of the Home Servicemen’s Association, it Being understood that officers would m elected, ana the branch would be a subsidary of the Returned Services Association, which would protect the interests of all men that served within the Dominion for a period of six months or over.

The Borough Council at its meeting last evening adopted a recommendation to have the baths cleaned and painted with white silica paint., the Council to bear the cost. The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock said the baths were efficiently, conducted. The Council adopted the recommendation of a Special Committee that, owing to a shortage of other suitable material, numbers for houses be stencilled on gate-posts by Council employees, dark paint being used on lignt backgrounds and light paint on dark backgrounds. It was decided to support the Beautifying Society in its work. The Medical Officer of Health advised of local hairdressing shops oeing brought under regulation as from October. The Deputy Mayor, Mr. C. Caliari, reported on a conference held at Greymouth regarding the establishment of the plastics industry. The town Clerk stated rates collected up to the end of the rebate period totalled £6O 3s. Abattoir fees last month were £79 14s Bd. It was decided to renew the agreement with the,Town Clerk for a further three years. Mr. Cooper was appointed to act' as Town Clerk .during leave periods. It was resolved to commence dumping rubbish along the training wall on Gibson’s Quay between Bealy Street and Sale Street and to use of such material as motor-car chassis and old iron that would have a binding and solidifying effect, also to set up notices. The matter of flooding of properties in the rear of Revell Street was referred to lhe Works Committee for a report.
