[Our Own Correspondent.] Port of Westport, High Tides: a.m. p.m. Thursday 21, 03.15 03.49 WESTPORT, Oct. 20. The Holmlea arrives to-day from Picton and loads for Nelson. The Kartigi sailed early this morning for Auckland. Mrs .Lance Heaphy, who has been an inmate of Lewisham Hospitu. Christchurch, has returned to her home at Berlin’s. Mrs. R. G. Cutts of Christchurch, is visiting Westport as the guest of her sister, Mrs. C. E. Petersen, Peel Street. Mr. Wade of Granity, is slowly recovering from his recent accident. Mrs. H. Barnicoat, Dominion President of the Federation of Women’s Institutes, is visiting the West Coast. Mr. W. Spence left yesterday for Wellington. A.C. 2 Baker was a passenger by yesterday’s ’plane for Wellington. At the Nelson Education Board meeting on Monday last, Mr. J. H. Harkness, who will celebrate his 85th. birthday next Friday, was congratulated by the Board and presented with a pair of pipes from the Board members and staff. The Chairman, Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, m making the presentation, said the Board was proud to have Mr. Harkness as a member. He was as useful to-day as when he joined the Board 19 years ago. Mr. Harkness was most up-to-date in his views on education and retained all his faculties to a remarkable degree. Mr. Harkness suitably replied. Twenty-one members of the Mothers’ Union at Westport visited Reefton yesterday and attended services con-ducted by Archdeacon Smith and Rev. Learning. The visitors were tne guests of Reefton Mothers’ Union to mornins and afternoon tea. The hope was expressed that more of these exchanges of visits would be held, as the benefits ‘ experienced therefrom were inestimable. Westport members returned by last evening’s railcar. The appointment of Miss M. D. Forsyth as assistant-teacher at. Westport South School was confirmed at the recent meeting of the Nelson Education Board and Miss M. Bartlett was appointed assistant-mistress at Murchison District High School. A motion of sympathy with Mr. D. Wade, secondary assistant at the Granity High School, who was seriously injured in an accident on Saturday, was carried. The transfer of the contract from Mrs. Walker to Mr. McAlpine for the conveyance of pupils to Inangahua Junction School from Three Channel Flat and Buller Gorge, was approved. It was decided to apply to the Education Department for an increase of 25 per cent, on all fixed grants to meet higher costs. The Department notified the Board that in future Boards could evercise their discretion in regard to insisting- on school buildings being insured when let to religious bodies. The Board was also advised , that Education Boards had been declared an essential industry. The secretary reported that 50 applications had been received for admission to the Teachers’ Training College. The Board’s Quota is 30 students for the Nelson district. The. Selection Committee will commence interviewing candidates at Reefton on November’ 8’ also 27 entries had been received from the Nelson Education District for the Tinlin Scholarship this year. This is only half the number that competed for the scholarship on the last occasion.
