Holland as Leader of the Parliamentary section of the National Party was unanimously agreed on at a caucus of its members in Parliament House, on Tuesday. A motion of condolence with Mr. Arthur Robinson in the death of his wife was passed at last evening’s meeting of the Grey Electric Power Board. Mr. Robinson, was a former member of the Board. A British Official Wireless message slates that the former commander .of the Eighth Army -in Libya, Lieut-enant-General Sir Alan Cunningham, has taken over his new duties as G.O.C. of British troops in Northern Ireland,. The condition of Frank Brown, who was injured on October 3, when the motor-cycle on which he was riding pillion, crashed into palings at the end of Tainui Street, was last evening reported as still being serious. A native of Gippslanu, Victoria, he came to Okarito at an early age and for many years was in business as a butcher at Kameri and Hokitika. He married the eldest daughter of the late Mr. H. H. Diedrich, of Lower Kokatahi. His wife died some time ago, and he is survived by four daughters and three sons, M’esdames J. Dillon of Roileston; F. G. Lynch, of Keeft.on; J. Adamson of Harihari, and F. C. Davison, of Christchurch; and Messrs J. Burrowes, of New Brighton; H. Burrowes, of Annat; and L. Burrowes (overseas). A Press Association message announces the death of Mr. John Rigg, C.M.G., at Christchurch yesterday, at the age of 85 years. Born at St. Kilda, in 1858, he served an apprenticeship as compositor, and became interested in Trade Unions, being a founder of the Wellington Trades and Labour Council in 1888. In 1892, he was appointed the first Labour representative on the Legislative Council, a position he retained until 1941. In 1909, he became editor of the “Weekly Herald.” From 1922 to 1935 he was a W.E.A. tutor. He judged many oratorical contests in Greymouth and other centres some 1 years ago, and wrote several books lon public speaking.
