DENNISTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] A pretty wedding was solemnised in the Denniston Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 11. the contracting parties being Eric Dudley, youngest son of Mr. A. Moore (Christchurch) and Ann, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Trotter (Burnett's Face). Rev. A. McNeur officiated. Mrs. L. Blanchet presided at the organ. The bride escorted by her father, was attended by her sister, Miss M. Trotter, as bridesmaid, and the bridegroom was attended by Mr. W. Trotter jnr (brother of the bride) as best man. A solo was rendered by Mrs. L. Blanchet. A reception was held later at Roper’s Hotel, where Mrs. Trotter and Mr. A. Moore received the guests. The usual toa'st list was honoured. A dance followed in the Mission Hall, music being supplied by Miss E. Pullar and extras by Mrs. F. Woodford and Mr. T. Glendenning. The bridegroom is a returned serviceman.

Mrs. A. Martin and Lance-Corporal G. Martin are at present on holiday in the North Island. Mr. A. Sands met with an accident to his hand last Thursday. He is doing well now. Mr. A. Dowse is an inmate of the local hospital. His many friends will be pleased to hear that’ he is improving. Mrs. J. Bateson is also an inmate of the local hospital. Mr. E. W. Nicolaus (Independent candidate for Buller-) was a' visitor to the hill during the week and gave an address at Burnett’s Face. The Westport Boys’ Band again treated the residents to a splendid programme, supported by capable artists, Mr. A. Caldwell and Miss V. Fhipps. The boys also rendered solos and vocal items. Great credit is due to Mr. Ken Smith the conductor for the way these boys have improved, and the band is also to be congratulated. Mr. T. Prenderville, Hon. O. Bishop and Mr. J. McArthur, members of the Coal Commission, visited the hill last Thursday and were met by members of the Union Executive when several matters of importance were discussed.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Crawford, after spending a holiday in the North Island, have returned home. The Denniston Women’s Institute held their seventh birthday party at the R.S.A. rooms on September 10th inst. there being visitor-s from Marshalvale. Hector, Stockton, Millerton j and Birchfield. The evening opened with the Ode, and the A.spirations I were read by Mrs. Illton (Stockton). ‘ The roll -call, a parlour joke, was i very amusing. Games and dancing j wa's thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Waimangaroa ’visitors nut on two amusing sketches, which were much ! appreciated, and Denniston members . acted two playts, which were well apI plauded. Mrs. Lewis, as ai founda- ; tion member, cut the cake. The | point prizes resulted: Mrs.. Lewis 1; i Mrs. G. Jack 2. The President and i Secretary were presented with gifts from the members by Mrs. E. Ward. I The Miners’ Union met on Thursday, Mr. J. Langmuir presiding over a fair attendance. Mr. V. Anderson gave a report on a recent Central Committee meeting. The report was accepted. A protest from the Union was voiced against the manner in which the Central Committee conducted business. The meeting agreed to work last back Saturday (September 18) contrary to :a' vote earlier in the week to observe the day as a I holiday. Mr. A. Allen was appoint-

ed to a vacancy on the executive as truckers’ representative. Several minor matters were also discussed. Two members on furlough from the Middle East. Fireman W. Pearson and Lance-Corporal A. Glendenning were on Sunday evening given by the Fire Brigade a welcome home at the station. S'upt. W. Warne and Mr. D. Toller (an ex member) voiced the sentiments of the Brigade and all present spent a pleasant evening. Neakawau seniors defeated Pirates bv 19 to 6 at Denniston, on Sunday. The back play was ma.T'red by rain. The forward packs had : a hard tussle. Pirates, who were with, out the services of several of their regular play;ers, put up a good game. Outstanding plavers for Pirates were, D. Insull, A. Kitchen, A. Moseley (forwards). W. Mullins and W. Neighbours (backs). For the winners. W. Mumm. R. McRride (forwards) and S’. Dixon, C. SmaDholme and F. Reed (backs) were prominent.
