TRANSPORT APPEALS

WEST COAST SERVICES RENEWED. The Transport Appeal Authority (Mr F. V. Frazer) has announced the decisions of appeals affecting passenger and goods services on (the West Coast. Gibbs’ Transport Ltd., Westport, S. Crockett and others, Karamea, appealed against the decision of the No 3 Transport Licensing Authority in 'deleting the Westport-Seddonvilie section from the continuous passengser service operated by Gibbs’ Transport Ltd., between Westport and Karamea. . ;

In the statement of his decision to allow the appeal, Mr Frazer said that by the deletion of tho WestportSeddonvilie section, a garage and housing facilities would have to be provided at Seddonville. The service had already been limited to three return trips weekly. The distance covered was about 65 miles each way for 29 of which the road ran roughly parallel to the railway. The railway service was inconvenient and the road service carried mail, bread, meat, etc., along the route. In the second case Gibbs’ Transport Ltd., Westport, and S. H. Jones and others of Barrytown and Pun.akaiki appealed aga’nst the No ■> Transport Licensing .Authority s decision in reducing the company s passenger service between Greymouth .and Punakaiki to two return trips per week. . . In reversing that decision, M.r Frazer said that from the evidence before him, the curtailed service was inadequate The service carried cream to the butter factory at Greymouth and was the only service available for this purpose. The through services by road from Westport to Greymouth did not provide for the Punakaiki residents.
