WAIUTA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Mrs A. Saunders- has been spending a few days here as the guest of Mrs R. Taylor. Mrs T. F. McKenzie, of Reelton, is among the guests at the Empire Hotel. . Mrs R>. M. Hempseed, who .is an inmate of the Reefton Hospital, is making satisfactory progress. Mrs Patham, of Hastings, is visit,ng here as the guest of Mrs K. H. Kent. „ Miss Valerie Thomas, of Greymouth, was a visitor at the weekend. J . .. Mrs H. Jarvis is spending a lew days in Hokitika. Mr W. Dawer, who is an inmate of the Reefton Hospital is making favourable progress. Mr R? T. Geary (Postmaster) who leaves for Brunner in a few days was entertained at a social evening in the Institute Hall on Saturday evening, when a Large crowd was present, including a number from Blackwater. Music was supplied by Mr E. Faulsham, Mesdames R. Robertson and S. Ramsden, while Mr T. Sullivan had charge of the Poor. Items were contributed by Mesdames G. Ward, R. Taylor, D. Robertson, S. Ramsden, Miss M. Rodden, Messrs A. Bright, S. Ward, G. Stephens and T. Sullivan. By special request Mrs H. Jarvis sang “Charlie Brown.” A competition held during the evening was won by Mrs Lawrence Darby. Mr J'. Rodden on behalf of the townspeople presented Mr Geary with an enevolpe of notes, and in doing so referred to the courteous .and obliging manner in which he had discharged his duties. Mr S. P. Williams (president Inangahua Miners’ Union) also spoke, and thanked Mr Geary for the many courtesies he had extended to the Union. Mr Geary suitably replied and thanked the speakers for their kind remarks and the public for their presentation. He regretted leaving Waiuta where he had made many friends, and as far as he knowq no enemies. A happy gathering concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Sapper T. Cockerell arrived home on furlough from the Middle East on Tuesday evening. He was met at his mother’s residence by a representative gathering of the public. The Home Guard formed a guard of honour, while the school children lined the road. Speeches were made by Mr J. Rodden and Mr T. R. Hogg. Sapper Cockerell suitably replied. A number of other ex-Waiuta boys were included in the draft, and it is intended to hold a welcome home social evening, probably on Saturday week.
