QUEEN CARNIVAL
The amount required from the Queen Carnival, now in the third week, is £lO,OOO, and many might ask why the amount is so large. It, however, is just the quota for the Grey 'Borough and County district, estimated on a population basis, to keep the fighting forces supplied with every need on the battlefield, plus comforts and recreational purposes during convalescence or on leave, and supplying libraries, huts, canteens. etc. The National Patriotic Board earmarks £5OOO directly for the Red Cross, Y.M.C.A.. religious and other organisations in various amounts, to care for the special needs of the men. Then there is the sum required for men when they return, so that all can be given necessities in clothing and financial assistance for the “in between period" of being drafted from the Army back to civilian life and rehabilitation. Back in civilian life some are more unfortunate than others, .and make a call on a fund, which must be built up at least until the war ceases. Citizens should help either or all of the Queen Committees, on shop days in the home, and on lhe street. Miss America (Miss E. O'Neill) represents the trades, professions and factories in Greymouth; Miss Britannia (Miss Joan Pearson) represents the Railways, P. and T., and all civil services; Miss Russia (Miss J. Gutberlet) represents the Grey County, including Runanga and Brunner.
