Mr W. G. McMillan, Central Otago, is visiting Greymouth.

Mrs Fedem. Karitane, is the guest of Mrs T. Torrance, Greymouth.

Mr B. C. Warnes and Mr W. Lee Martin, M.P., who attended the funeral of Mr Earnest Warnes will leave to-day on return to Wellington.

Mr J'ohn Edward O’Connell who died of injuries suffered in the Hyde railway disaster, was a brother or Mrs L. F. Casey, of Christchurch, formerly of Greymouth. Mr J- Mulcare, of Ngahere, and Bishop O Neill of Dunedin, were his cousins. He leaves a family of ten.

Master Billy Boyle, of Kaiata, won both the sword dance (boys under 18 years) and the march (boys or girls under 16 years) at the Otago Piping and Dancing Association’s Competitions at Dunedin on the first day, Saturday last.

Mr. R. P. Geary, Postmaster at Waiuta, has been transferred to the position of Postmaster at Brunnerton, and will take up his duties early next month. In the meantime, Mr. A. J. Bannister, of Hokitika, is acting Postmaster at Brunnerton.

The death occurred in England recently of Mrs. Trever Watkins (Alice Poiland). She was the late Tom Polland’s only daughter, and for some years sang as leading lady in his productions before she went to England.

A special London cable stated: Flying Officer H. A. Poole, D.F.C. Invercargill, was married to Miss Joan Birch, of Chingford, at Chingford. Squadron Leader M. A. Ensor, D 15.0.. D.F.C. and Bar, of Rangiora, was best man, and also present were Warrant Officer P. Irving (Invercargill), and Mrs B. Hamilton (Dunedin?.

Mr Herbert Yardley, a well-known farmer in the Toatoa district, near Opotiki, yesterday received fatal injuries when engaged in felling a tree. Mr Yardley, who was married and 73 years of age, had his leg badly crushed when the tree rolled over him, and suffered other body injuries. He was admitted to the Opotiki Public Hospital, where the leg was amputated, death following from shock. —Press Assn.

Sister Rae, of the staff of the Grey River Hospital, was tendered a farewell social on Tuesday evening by the Registered Nurses’ Association, the staff of the hospital and members of the Hospital Board on the occasion of her departure for Christchurch to join the Army Nursing Service. Matron N. Moffatt, an behalf of the association, presented Sister Rae with a pair of grey kid gloves and on behalf of the staff with a fountain pen and an Eversharp pencil. During the evening, Hospital Final Certificates were presented to Nurses. Bradley and Smith. Sister Rae will leave Greymouth to-day.

A cable from London states: Flight. Lieutenant L. W. Griffiths, JD.F.C., of Levin, was on Tuesday married to Corporal Erin Mary Ford, W.A.A.F., of Chalfont, Saint. Giles, at Chalfont Saint Giles. Flight Lieutenant H. N. Sweetman. D.F.C.. of Auckland, was best man, and Flight Lieutenant J. D. Rae, D.F.C., of Auckland was chief usher. Flight Lieutenant Griffiths, and Flight Lieutenants Sweetman and Rae were all Sergeants;, together, and were original members of the N.Z. Spitfire Squadron. The bride is the chief driver and personal Secretary to the Group Captain of an important fighter station. There were 250, guests at the reception.
