BAKERS’ APPEALS

DEMAND FOR .BREAD IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, June 4. A long list of Auckland bakers’ appeals was adjourned sine die by the Armed Forces Appeal Board to-day. Mr R. S. Harrop, secretary of the Master Bakers’ Association, said that Auckland had experienced a larger increase in the demand for bread than any other part in the Dominion. This was due to the size of the Armed Forces here, addition to the heavy demand from shops and restaurants. Men were being retained who would normally go out of the bakehouses through age or inefficiency. To-day there were practically no apprentices. When second-hand machinery was advertised for sale there was a scramble for it. Women were employed, as far as possible, on delivery rounds, but did not total more than 10 per cent, of the roundsmen as the strain was too great for a large number to take up the work. Some returned men. or men released by the Army, had been tried in the industry, but they were unable to stand up to the work. Sixty hqurs weekly were being worked in bakehouses.
