To replace the old worn-out rope, a new main haulage steel rope to serve both the James and the Strong'man mines, is being installed. The new rope is 26,400 feet long, weighs 37i tons and is valued at £5,600. The Minister of Civil Defence, Hon. D. Wilson, states that inquiries received by the Civil Defence _ Headquarters indicate that there is some misunderstanding as to what persons are required to enrol in the E.P.S.. in accordance with the .Emergency Reserve Corps Enrolment Order gazetted recently. The Minister said that many persons who. have already enrolled and are serving in the E.P.S'. were taking action to submit a further enrolment, but this wa's not necessary'. Similarly persons Who are serving in' the Home Guard, or the Emergency Fire Service, or anyone actually serving in any branch ot the Armed Forces were not required to enrol.—iP.A.

The concrete work at the northern breakwater is on a much bigger scale than is generally realised. Up to the present, over 6,000 tons of concrete have been laid down on 8,000 tons of stone' foundation. The projected plan is to have the last 50 yards of the breakwater being solid concrete with an apron of huge concrete blocks weighing from 20 to 80 tons laid "round the base to protect it. Work was 'expected to finish yesterday on a huge 132 ton block of dimensions 20 feet io ng by 10 feet by 8 feet, which is to be placed at the south-western corner as <an anchor block, A recent incident gives some idea of the difficulties attached to ‘the work. In three weeks the sea shifted a massive 80-ton block 20 yards, and it is now firmly bedded in its new position.
