GERMAN RATIONS

— • —— “ EFFECT OF BRITISH BLOCKADE.

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, May 19. The first admission since the outbreak of wav that the British blockade was responsible for reductions in the German rations was made 'by the Reich. Minister for Food, Doctor Rieke, in a’ broadcast over the Berlin radio. He said that he wished to explain the painful facts behind the recently announced reduction in tne meal ration, because there had been much questioning on the decision. “You must realise that cattle depend on imported feeding stuffs, and the British blockade make imports difficult,” ho said. “Wo are forced to reduce both our cattle herds and pig population. We know that Germans won’t relish eating vegetables m place of meat, but they must accustom themselves to that; and even vegetables will have to be reduced, partly because of the shortage of labour, partly because of the weather.”
