U.S. COAL DISPUTE
TRUCE EXTENDED. (Rec. 8.20.) WASHINGTON. May 17. John Lewis, head of the United Mine Workers, announced he would extend the coal truce until May 31. He thus acceded to the request of Secretary Ickes to forestall work stoppage. A War Labour Board statement charged Lewis with being solely responsible for the stalemate in the coal contract negotiations. Lewis had challenged the sovereignty of the United States. The issue now confronting the nation is whether he is above and beyond the laws applying to all other citizens. The coal controversy like all wage disputes, came under the jurisdiction of the War Labour Board by Presidential order.
