MAGISTRATE’S COURT

GREYMOUTH SITTING.

Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday. Peter Hassan, a miner of Taylorville, was charged with a breach ot the electrical wiring regulations. Mr F. A. Kitchingham, for the Grey Power Board, said that a flex had been connected to a light point in one room and taken out to a radio in another room. In connecting up the radio, defendant had used the wrong wires, electrifying the earth wire, which would have killed anyone touching it. The, breach was detected by the excessve absorption of electricity, defendant paying £4 more than his usual bill. James Frederick Knight, a PowerBoard Inspector, said that instead of two wires as was usual with modern radios, defendant’s set had three wires, and using only two on a twopoint plug, he had used the wrong ones. This would make it distinctly dangerous for anyone outsde. There was quite a lot of amateur wiring of sets being done. Defendant was fined £1 with costs 10s, and solicitor’s fee £1 Is. George Arthur Carlyle was charged with the disobedience of a maintenance order. Mr W. D. Talor appeared for the complainant, Mrs Ivy Elizabeth New Carlisle, the wife of defendant. Mr C. K. Morel. Maintenance Officer at Greymouth, gave evidence. Defendant was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays the current maintenance of £1 10s weekly, with £1 off the arrears of £lO2 2s, the first payment to be made on May 24.
