Super grade petrol, which has not been procurable in New Zealand for many months, will be shortly released to motorists. This new release petrol will have a higher octane rating than that of even pre-war days.

A large number of sportsrfien were out yesterday, it being the last day of the short game shooting season m <the Grey Acclimatisation Societyfs district. The bags varied greatly according to the areas chosen. Last week an additional allocation of 10,000 cartridges was made to the council of the' South Island Acclimatisation Societies for the season, but urgent overtures by the Grey Society for additional supplies had not brought results when the season closed. if ! additional ammunition does come to hand it will be held for next season.

After the meeting members entertained friends in celebration of the ninth birthday of the Institute. Two humorous plays were presented.

Presentations were made to Miss Kirk on the occasion of her marriage, and to Mesdames McPhie. senr.,_ and .Forsyth, who are leaving the district. A baby’s bank was presented.to Mrs. A. McPhie. The demonstration of “smocking” was given by Mrs. Geo. Smith. The monthly competition, “Something new from something old,” was won by Mrs. Batey. A novelty competition “Dental Plates.” was also won bv Mrs. Batey. The Roll Call “Uses of sour milk,” was well responded to. The hostesses were Mesdames Gibson, McMinn, Ramsay and Miss Kirk.

I The Coal Creek protection works were discussed with Hon. J. O Brien during his visit to Greymouth last week by a meeting of nine farmers of the district, along with Hon. J. Kflali, M.L.C., and Mr. J. Higgins (Grey County Engineer) who, as representatives of the County had convened the meeting. The proposal was to strengthen the pi election works, the settlers to pay £1366, onesixth of the estimated cost. Mr. Higgins, in a statement yes'tei. clay, said that to raise a loan of £1366 on , the same terms as the previous loan would mean an additional rate pt isa in £ on the capital value of the settlers’ property. On the previous loan they were paying Id in £ and •the settlers felt that 2id in £ was too ' heavy a' load. As a consequence the settlers are applying to the county for assistance and if their application is successful they then propose to approach the Government for additional help. The existing protection was erected in 1938 and since then the river has changed its points of stress and thus somewhat endangering the stop bank. A freak carrot of extraordinary shane has been grown by Mr. _E. Warwick, of Dunollie. It has thirteen roots and the crown measures three inches across. It was grown from a transplanted seedling. A carrot with two crowns and one root has been grown b-- a Blaketown resident.

Under the Clothing Ration Order, 194.3, all retailers of rationed clothing and footwear are required to secure a certificate of registration and a license to trade, before J tine 1, said the Greymouth Rationing Officer, in a statement yesterday.
