FATAL HOCKEY INJURY. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. Following an injury received while playing hockey in Hagley Park on Tuesday, Barrymore George Gibbons, aged 12 years, of 176 Clarence Road, became ill, and died in the Christchurch Public Hospital at noon on the following day. N.Z. DIVISION PRAISED. P.A. WELLINGTON, May 14. The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) has received from the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Curtin) a cablegram expressing congratulations on the notable part the gallant NewZealand troops played in the Tunisian victory, adding: “We pray that these successes may result in a speedy and complete victory for the Allied nations over the Axis forces, and pave the way for an enduring peace.” MILITIARY CAMP FIRE. BLENHEIM, May 14. The back-tiring of a motor lorry, which, itself, became a total loss, caused an outbreak of fire at a military camp in Marlborough about 6.30 o’clock, last evening. An adjacent structure was quickly aflame and as this contained a large quantity of explosives hurried calls for assistance were sent both to an air station and to Blenheim. An emergency crew was quickly on its way from town. Its departure, with an E.P.S. trailer pump, combined with the fact that for some time previously a series of muffled explosions could clearly be heard in Blenheim, caused considerable: conjecture. Brigadesmen found it was impossible, on arrival, at the scene, to approach very near the centre of the outbreak because of. the risk from explosives, but after the flames had died down somewhat several hundred gallons of water from an Air Force tender were poured on to the fire through the trailer pump. No one was injured, although one man suffered from the effects of shock An inquiry has been instituted by the Army authorities. MAINTENANCE CASE. WELLINGTON, May .14. The Court of Apneal to-day delivered judgment in the appeals between George William Kain, of Wellington, warehouseman, and his wife. Nellie Maria Kain. An appeal by the husband concerning the quantum of maintenance had been withdrawn at the hearing and was formally dismissed. There was a cross-appeal by the wife on the same question of possession of the matrimonial home. The Court found there was no authority for the wife’s request for a gross sum for the purchase of another house. The wife had no absolute right to remain in the matrimonial home after the making of an order for periodical payments of alimony, and the husband was not bound to find another home for the wife. The wife’s appeal on this question, therefore, was dismissed, but the Court decided to allow th e wife 28 days in which to vacate, SOLDIER CHARGED. DUNEDIN, May 13. In the Supreme Court this morning the first of the Army acquittance cases was heard, when John Gavin Mclntyre, a soldier, was put on trial on two charges of forgery by affixing false signatures to Army acquittance rolls. He pleaded not guilty. Accused in evidence said he had been assured by tlie clerk in charge of the pay that in signing names other than his own everything was all right and above-board. He had not disguised his writing, and had received no money except what he would have been entitled to had he been a civilian instead of a soldier. Accused was found guiltv on all charges and remanded for sentence.
