D.F.M. TO N.Z. AIRMEN
WELLINGTON, May 21. Two recently; commissioned New Zealand airmen, serving overseas in ithe R.N.Z.A.F., have been awarded the DF M Thev are Pilot Officer (formerly Flight ‘Sergeant) William Arthur Hamilton (mother, Mrs. A Hamilton, Kawhatau, Mangaweka) and Pilot Officer (formerly Sergeant) Rae Jessop Taaffe (father, Mr. C. D. Taaffe, Hastings). The citations state: Hamilton displayed high, courage and has shown exceptional navigational ability, and his’ missions, which included a. daylight attack on U-boat yards at Danzio-, have been mostly against heavily defended targets in Germany. Taaffe at all times pressed home his attacks with the utmost determination and courage, and scored many brilliant hits with bombs. Hamilton was born at Kawhatau in 1914, and educated at the Wanganui Technical College. Taaffe was born at Frasertown, Hawke’s Bay., in 1918, and. educated at the Hastings High School. .
