The Grey River Argus WEDNESDAY, May 12, 1943. INVASION AGAINST GERMANY.

The possibility of an Allied invasion of Europe, following Ihe successes of the North African campaign, has aroused considerable speculation. The immediate route to domination of Europe and ultimate victory seems to be through Italy. .It is unlikely that the Italians themselves would offer much resistance, for they have not shown any great enthusiasm for the war so far. Whether Germany has fortified this area is doubtful. Earlier reports indicated that she had practically taken control of Italy, and it may be that the country is wed defended, and that an invasion might meet with stern resistance. On the other hand it is apparent that Germany can ill afford to keep a labge and well equipped army in Italy. If she does she lays herself open to losing the advantage she has gained in other parts of Europe. She has to police the countries she has occupied—apparently an exceedingly difficult task—and she has to maintain her fighting strength in Russia, where her calculations again and again have been upset. Iler domination of Europe, has, like that of Napoleon, been upset by two factors —that the people of the dominated countries violently object to their subjection, that Russia has a strong wish to maintain hei‘ own independence. Germany has many gates to guard on her European fortress, and it will be a matter for Allied strategy to decide where the attack should be made. This is a matter of military Mrafegy, but there is no doubt that ; it will be welcomed by a host of willing helpers. Europe has already shown itself to be unwilling to accept domination from any one country. The support that Hitler has secured from the nations he has conquered has only been from a few who have sacrificed the interests of their fellows for the furthering of their own personal ambitions.
