Separate Offensives IN THE NORTH-WEST. LONDON, April .10. The Chungking correspondent of the Associated Press says: The Japanese used scores of bombers supporting 40,000 troops, in the biggest offensive in recent months in the Taihan Mountains, on the HonanShansi border. Both sides suffered heavy losses. Severe engagements took place at every mountain pass and height. The Chinese offered stout resistance. Chinese forces broke through a small town near Kinhwa, inflicting considerable casualties and destroying enemy barracks. A Chinese communique said: On April 16, 40,000 Japanese began simultaneous offensives in North Ho- i san and south-eastern Shansi, in a converging drive against the Chinese positions in the Taihan Mountains. A southern Japanese column is advancing along the Yellow River towards Shansi, an eastern column from north Honan is advancing towards Linhsien, and a western column from south Shansi is making for Linchwan. Heavy fighting is reported near Linchwan and Linhsien. Severe lighting continues in the Taihan Mountains. The Japanese occupied Linchwan, in south-eastern Shansi, after the withdrawal of a small Chinese unit, and are now threatening Linhsien.” General Stillwell JAPS CLAIM HIS CAPTURE. (Rec. 11.30.)
