COUNCIL

MEETING AT GREYMOUTH. Tne vvesr coast council of Brim-, ary Production held it& monthly l meeting yesterday. Mr. D. u. presided and there were aiso present] ivissrs bi. <j. Carter, IN. B. McCallum, I G. G. M. Mitchell and J. Mulcare iSecretary-urgamser). It was decided to hold the annual conference ot District Committees on the Council’s next meeting day, May 21, at 1 p.m. Committees will be to appoint delegates and prepare remits for the conference. Voting at the conference will be restricted to Che chairman of each District Committee or his deputy, but the number' of delegates from District Committees will not be limited. The Secretary-Organiser (Mr. Mulcare) was asked to attend annual meetings of District Committee’s where possible, to keep them in touch with the policy of the West Coast and National Councils. The organisation of the SouthWestland area was discussed, Mr. Mitchell pointing out that injustice was often done to farmers, and to men whose release from camp was applied for, because ot the lack of accurate and prompt reports. Mr. Carter considered that either the Secretaray or Chairman or both should visit the area. The Chairman and Secretary were finally appointed to organise the area.. Some of the difficulties faced in poultry farming on the Coast were mentioned when the visit next week of two members of the Poultry, Board was discussed. The Chairman (Mr. Jellie) remarked that heavy transport charges were one of the biggest burdens which had to be faced. Nothing had come of the attempt made over a long period to get lower freights on back loadings from Canterbury. It was decided to put' this matter before the members of the Board. The difficulty in obtaining pullets was also mentioned, and the view was expressed that something should be done to -compel poultry farmers in Canterbury to release pullets to other districts. Dissatisfaction was expressed with the recent amendment of the Transport Regulations under which ancillary users, including farmers, are required to license their vehicles, the license to be reviewed annually. j.he view, that the operation of farmers’ own vehicles on their own business, which had always been regarded by the farming community as a right, was taken from it. The constitution of Transport Committees vzas also the subject of comment. Members said that, though it was not suggested that the power of operators who sat in judgment on themselves and their competitors had been misused, the position was unfair.
