CHRISTCHURCH, April 4. Inconsistencies in the evidence relating to events for some time prior to the accident were commented on by the Coroner (Mr. F. F. Reid), at ah inquest into th e death of John Herbert Newton, coal merchant, 57 Mary Street, Papanui, who was killed on. February 8 when a car driven by his son, Jock Newton, hit a telegraph pole at the corner of the Main South Road and Curletts Road, Upper Riccarton. Bertha Mary Berrv. of Yaldhurst, said that a! man called'O’Malley and the Newtons called at her home on the afternoon of February 8. They had some beer, and left between 5.30 and 6 o’clock. It would be untrue to sav they returned after 6,30. Th R boy Newton was quite capable of driving. The Coroner recalled that at a previous inquest Jock Newton had said the oarty returned to Mrs. Berry’s home at 6. p.m, and stayed till 11.30. A verdict was returned mat death was due to> shock after a n internal haemorrhage of the heart.
