By MacArthur’s Planes (Special to N.Z. Press Assn.) (Rec. 9.35) ‘‘ SYDNEY, April 5. General MacArthur’s Communique to-day stated: NORTH-WESTERN SECTOR. There has been reconnaissance activity only in this area. , NORTH-EASTERN SECTOR. New Guinea;— Lae: Our medium and afitack bombers, accompanied by long-range fighters, executed a coordinated early morning attack on. the enemy defence perimeter, covering Lae, in the Markham Valley. Nearly twenty tons of bombs were dropped in the supply dump and building area, causing numerous fires, accompanied by large explosions. Twenty-three thousand rounds of ammunition were expended in more than forty strafing passes over the area. Resultant damage was heavy. There was no interception. All of our planes returned. Salamaua:— One of our heavy units bombed the town area. Mubo:—Our attack planes continuing their offensive in low-level sweeps bombed and strafed an enemy position in Kitchen Creek.
