OTAGO BARREL ORGAN

GOVERNOR-GENERAL PLAYS TUNE. DUNEDIN, March 30. Many distinguished visitors to Dunedin, including members of the Royal Family, have played a tune on the barrel organ in' the Otago Early Settlers’ Association Museum. The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, was one of the most recent players, and, at a function in the Pioneers’ Hall, the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, Sir Harry Batterbee, was called upon to take a turn at the handle. This organ was brought to New Zealand in 1851 by Dr Richardson, and was used in the Anglican Church which is now St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was afterwards sold and came into the possession of the family of Mr E. B. Atkinson, of Oamaru, being used in the early davs by ministers of various congregations who conducted services in that district. It was subsequently presented by the Atkinson family to the Early Settlers’ Association.
