HOKITIKA, March 17.

Flying Officer L. Parry, of rhe New* Zealand Air Force, is spending a few days in Hokitika. Mr. W. Anderson, of Greymouth, was a visitor to Hokitika.

The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided at the meeting of the borough Council on Tuesday, also present being Crs. T. W. Duff, C. Caiarai, G. Heinz, J. K. Aitken, E. W. Heenan, D P. Stuart,. W. A. Storforth. An apology was received from Cr. L. L. Ross. Crs. Heinz and Stopforth were appointed representatives on the Milk Vending Committee and Cr. Duff to the Fire Board The Clerk was instructed to report on rating of church property 1 and tennis courts. The Methodist Trust Board applied for relief from paying part rates on portion of the Methodist property which is occupied by the Jubilee tennis courts and stating that in normal conditions the whole of the income received from the Club is paid to tne Council in rates, but now under war conditions the Club is practically defunct and is now w'thout any means of income. The Board also asked that the open drain along the Iroinage of the Methodist Church in Sewell Street be filled in. The Sisters of MercJi, St. Columbkille’s Convent, wrote asking for exemption from rates of part of property formerly a' private residence. J. Hutchison and five others wrote asking for a street light at the corner of Stafford and Livingstone Streets.—Request granted. It was decided to shift a hgnt at Evans’ to corner of Hoffman and Stafford Streets. Crs. Stuart and Heinz are to report on the necessity for a light at the intersection of Sta.ford and Jolfie Streets. Hokitika School Committee applied for the sealing of the tennis courts. It was resolved that the, staff carry out the work on Saturdays other than during working hours. It was decided also to tar seal portion of the entrance to the Church of England grounds. In reply to private applications it was decided that the staff could not carry out such tar sealing. Abbattoir fees for the month amounted to £B6 19s Id. The Deputy Mayor paid a tribute to the Beautifying Society, for excellent work carried out, ' the entrance 'to the swimming baths being worthy of special mention. The Council decided to permit the Society to beautify the area on the western side of Fitzherbert Street between Weld and Stafford Street. The organiser of a goodwill tour to Westport on April 4 invited the Mayor and Councillors, who decided to join in. Cr. Heenan I said the Council should assist in securing doctors for the town. The| Hospital Board would be appointing a new Medical Superintendent for the i hospital, but this would still only leave one /doctor ior the hospital, town and outlying areas.
