WELLINGTON. Feb. 25.

Moving the Address-in-Reply motion in the Legislative Council today, Hon. Mr. Eddy compared the unfavourable war position a year ago with the favourable situation now. He paid tributes to the Russians, Americans, Chinese, and said that the New Zealanders had shown that they had no peers as fighting men. There were no more glorious soldiers in history than th e Maoris. ■ Dealing with affairs in New Zealand, Mr. Eddy praised the workers’ war effort and immense achievements in defence construction.

Seconding the motion, Hon. Mr. Cummings praised the Government for the manner of its handling of the defence of the country. He gave, a warning against undue optimism about the war, which was a long way from being finished yet, but . he thought that it was only a matter of time before the Japanese would be driven from the Pacific.
