WAIUTA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.) Mr Tom Lewis who has been spending a holiday here, has returned to Denniston. Mrs A. Fulham, Wellington, is visiting here, and is a guest at the Empire Hotel. Messrs Milne (2), of Ashburton, were week-end visitors as the guests of Mr and Mrs D. Douglas. Mrs V. Leathwick has joined the staff of the Waiuta post office. The sympathy of the community is extended to Mr and Mrs T. Llewellyn in the death of Mr Llewellyn’s brother, which occurred at Westport during the weekend. Mr and Mrs Llewellyn returned from Westport on Tuesday evening. Master "-Steve Hocking who underwent an operation at the Christchurch Hospital during the week, is making satisfactory progress. Mrs R. Frewen, Greymouth, and Mr Tom Jarvis, Blenheim, are visiting their mother, Mrs H. Jarvis. Mr G. Halsey is spending a few days here visiting his' sisters, Mesdames S. Stephens and W. Prendergast. Mrs P. Connors was a visitor to Greymouth during the week. Mesdames V. Adams and J. Phillips are spending a few days in Christchurch. L/Cpl. J. Leatham, N.Z. Engineers, who has been spending leave here returned to camp on Monday morning. Mr and Mrs Percy Collins and daughter, Wellington, have been the guests of Mrs W. G. Harris. Mr Collins was one of the original Cornish miners who arrived here some twenty-odd years ago, under engagement' to the Blackwater Mines 'Ltd. Mr and Mrs H. A. Ord were weekend visitors to Reefton. Mr. and Mrs Tom Sullivan returned from Christchurch on Monday evening. The Education Board staff is at present painting the local school and teachers’ residence. A farewell social evening was tendered to L/Cpl. J. Leatham, N.Z. Engineers, and Mr and Mrs R. Smith and family, the latter of whom are leaving here to take up their residency at Runanga. 'The function was held in the Miners’ Hall, after the pictures, when a large crowd was present. Music was supplied by Mrs Devescovi, Messrs E. Brown, E. Faulsham, W. Lines. M. Lines, Mesdames S. Ramsden and R. Robertson, while Mr V. Adams had charge of the floor. Mr J. Rodden presented L/Cpl. Leatham with an envelope from the Soldiers’ Entertainment Committee, and also one from two pals of his. and in doing so extended best wishes for a safe passage and a speedy return. L/Cpl,. Leatham suitably (replied. Mr and Mrs Smith and family were also the recipients of an envelope from the residents of the township, and reference was made by the chairman to their good work during their stay here. Mr Smith responded, and thanked the people for their good wishes and kind remarks. He assured them they regretted leaving such good friends. The gathering concluded at midnight with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. A competition held during the evening was won by .IL/Cpl. Leatham. A monologue was rendered by Mr Terry Smith A dainty supper was served by the ladies’ committee.
