HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own rnrrospontmnt) HOKITIKA, Jan. 22. At Westland Hospital Dr. B. L. and Mrs. Wilson were entertained at a staff dinner by the Matron and staff on Thursday evening. The members of the Hokitika Red Cross Society met at the Soldiers’ Hall to bid farewell to Dr, and Mrs. Wilson. Mr. A. C. Armstrong, whq presided, in the absence of the Chairman, paid a high tribute to the work of Dr. Wilson for the Society in Hokitika and also to the assistance given by Mrs. Wilson. On entering the hall, Mrs. Wilson was presented with a heautifui shoulder spray, and Dr. Wilson with a buttonhole. The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, on behalf of the-Society made <a presentation to Dr. Wilson />!' a smoker’s stand, and paid him a tribute for the generous service he had given the town and district. The following supported the Mayor. Messrs P. R. Whitford, S. King, R. Cooper, Mesdames K bane and K. Paterson. Mrs. Saivingy presented Mrs. Wilson with a half dozen crystal goblet glasses from the members of the Red Cross classes. The guests were accorded musical honours, Dr. Wilson expressed thanks for the kind expressions, especially those m regard to Mrs. Wilson, and for tiie presentations which he would treasure as a reminder of his many good friends in Hokitika. A musical programme was given, Miss. Dalv being the accompanist, and items being given by the- following: Pianoforte duet, Miss Daly and Mrs. Jordan; Solo, Mrs. Harrison; Playette, Mesdames Bassett and terson; Musical monologue, Mrs. Jordan. I’he singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought :he evening to a close. On Saturday afternoon at the Soldiers’ Hail, Dr Wilson, Mrs. Wilson and Miss June Wilson will be tendered a public farewell by the citizens of Hokitika and residents of the Westland County.- The speakers will include the Mayor of Hokitika. Mr. A. R. Elcock; the County Chairman, Mr T. P. O’Neil; the Chairman of the Hospital Board, Mr. A. W. Heenan; and Mr. D. J. Evans. The function is timed to take place at three o'clock. Mr. A. H. Lawn will have charge of the musical programme On Thursday afternoon the Armed Forces Appeal Board. Messrs W. Meldrum (.chairman), Messrs A J. Panther and P. J. Wheeler, Mcllroy Jones and Richard Cummings (lorry duv--,rs)', Hokitika employees ol Westland Co-operative Dairy Coy.; William Hay (accountant), Frank Stewnrt and Rovce D. Williams (oilers), [van Olson "(electric welder) all employees of Rimu Flat Dredging Coy.; W M. McKechnie, pharmacy manager (appeal by L. F. Hogg); Richard Hall (dredge carpenter, Westland County Council); Martin Pickard (mechanic); Frederick W. Russell (dredgemaster). Carl brancis Schroder, licensee of the Central Hotel Hokitika, asked for release from camp for two months for business reasons, the .manage? in charge o the hotel having been a victim in uie recent air accident on tne Coast, and he required time to put his business m order. It was decided to grant the application. James Shannon, proprietor of the Gold Band taxis, appealed against service in the Home Guard owing to his business calling, on grounds of public interest and undue hardship, the appeal being allowed. The appeal ol Ihomas Growcott toiler) was dismissed, tne obligation to serve being postponed for three months. An appeal for release of Steve Geo. Stevens noni camp was dismissed. An appeal tor Francis Coliver (by Robert Robert Francis Ltd., was dismissed.
