IN THURSDAY’S RAIDS

[Special to N.Z. Press Assn. 1 (Rec. 11.55.) SYDNEY, Jan. 22 Air raids on Ambon, Rabaul and other enemy bases during the past couple of days with attacks on enemy shipping, are part of a continued widespread Allied air activity throughout the South-west Pacific command area. Altogether fourteen Zeros were shot down, on Thursday, and eight others were damaged. Over Wewak, four Liberators engaged twenty-five Zeros in a sixtyminutes’ running fight. Twelve of the enemy lighters were shot down. Six others were damaged. AH four Liberators returned safely.

The main Japanese New Guinea base at Lae has been attacked for the tenth consecutive day. The aerodrome was the bombers’ target.
