NO PAY INCREASE FOR N.I. DAIRY WORKERS. DANNEVIRKE, Jan. 20. A representative meeting of delegates from dairy companies operating in southern Hawke’s Bay unanimously decided not to meet the demands for an increase in wages recently made by employees in some factories on the ground that to do so would be contrary to the Economic Stabilisation Emergency Regulations. CHINESE KILLED ON RAILWAY. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 20. A Chinese market gardener, Jim Guthrie, of Temuka. was killed when he was struck by a railway engine close to the Springfield crossing at Temuka at 2 p.m. to-day. The train involved was the mixed train from Ashburton to Timaru. It is not clear what Guthrie was doing on the line when the engine caught him. ILLEGIBLE NUMBER PLATES. P.A. WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. Referring to the number of motor vehicles whose number plates had been rendered illegible chiefly by rust, the Minister of Transport (MrO’Brien) said the use of such plates was an offence which might result in prosecution. The Minister, after mentioning the illegibility partly as the result of the use of old plates to save steel, said that duplicate plates could be purchased from the Post Office, or on the other hand no objection would be raised t 0 the plates being repainted in the same colours as at present, provided the painting was done satisfactorily. .
