COADJUTOR BISHOP

DUNEDIN CATHOLIC DIOCESE. DR. HUGH O’NEILL APPOINTED. P-A. DUNEDIN, Jan. 19j Rev. Dr. Hugh O’Neill, who is at present resident at St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru, has been appointed Roman Catholic Coadjutor Bishop of Dunedin, with the right of succession. Rev. Dr. O’Neill was born in Dunedin. He is the son of the late Edward O’Neill and Mrs Elizabeth O’Neill of Dunedin. His primary education was received at the Convent of Mercy, at Mosgiel, where his parents resided in his youth, and he continued his education in Dunedin at the High School of the Christian Brothers. In the year 1914 h e entered Holy Cross Ecclesiastical College, Mosgiel. then under the direction of Right Rev. J. M. Liston (now Bishop of Auckland). On completion of his course at Holy Cross College, he was m 1921 ordained to the priesthood, he being the first Priest to be ordaine/1 by the Right Rev. Bishop Whyte, the present Bishop of Dunedin. After his ordination Dr. O’Neill went to the Irish College, Rome, and, after two years’ study there he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Canon Law.. On his return to the Dominion he was for the next ten years a professor at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. In 1933 he became Parish Priest at Mosgiel, in which position he remained for five years. For the past four years he has been Chaplain at St. Kevin’s College. Oamaru, and he has been National Organiser of the Pontificial Missionary Works for the Dominion.
