ABSENCE FROM WORK. WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. A departmental inquiry into tne question of absenteeism in industry is to be carried out in the four centres, accord.ng to an announcement by Mr Webb to-day. He said that this was in accord with the recommendation of the special committee of the Industrial Emergency Council. Recent inquiries by the Department of Labour, Wellington, disclosed that absence varies very materially in different centres. One noticeable feature was the cause of absence was not recorded by most employers, therefore it was not possible to distinguish between legitimate absence and absence without proper cause. NO REDUCTION IN RADIO FEES. WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. Consideration of a reduction in radio license fees will have to be deferred till essential development work planned by the National Broadcasting Service is completed after the war, according to advice received by the New Zealand Farmers’ Union from the Minister in Charge of Broadcasting (Mr Wilson). The plans, he says, envisage the completion of a national chain of stations to provide' better reception in certain and the provision of studios and accommodation. AIRCRAFT PASSENGER HURT WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. When an aircraft of the R.N.Z.A.F. landed early this morning, due to poor visibility, a passenger, C. W. Turner of the Public Works Department, Wellington, received injuries which necessitated his admission to hospital for observation. The pilot, Squadron Leader E. Smart, was not injured.

THANKSGIVING DAY. WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. United States forces in Wellington crowded the Cathedral Church of St. Paul this morning, for a simple and moving Thanksgiving Day service. Besides prominent Americans, including Legation officials, there were present: Lady Newall, the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) and Mrs Fraser, Sir Harry Batterbee and Lady Batterbee. At the entrance to the Sanctuary were unfurled the Stars and Stripes, and a regimental flag, above which were hanging the tattered battle flags of British regiments. The service followed the traditional service of the Anglican and American Episcopal Churches. The preacher was an American chaplain. Mr Lumpkin. The Bishon of Wellington participated in the service. CONFERENCE OF N.Z. LABOURERS. WANGANUI, Nov. 26. The annual conference of the New Zealand Labourers’ Federation was held in the City Council. Chambers, Wanganui. At the opening session. Mr L. Glover, National Presidentpresided over twenty delegates from all parts of New Zealand, representing 14,000 workers. The conference, after recalling that it never endorsed conscription for overseas service, olaced on record the opinion that now conscription is law, it is only just that all sections of the community share the burden equally, and protesting against “anv section of the community sheltering behind its own importance to avoid service.’’ The conference adopted a declaration protesting that some were only being asked “to lend money, while other were compelled to give lives’’, and urging that money for war finance be- raised by the same methods as manpower THEFT OF SAFE. P.A. CAMBRIDGE, Nov. 25. An intensive search is being made in the Cambridge-Hamilton districts to-dav for two men who, in the early hours of the morning, removed a safe from the premises of Lichwarks, radio of Cambridge, the safe containing £7 10s 6d. A sequel to the burglary was that the thieves, with a stolen car, crashed into a taxi coming from Hamilton to Cambridge at 3.45 a.m. The stolen safe fell off the front of the car. The thieves made a hurried getaway. In view of the serious nature of the collision the police believed that both wanted men have received injuries.
