AUSTRALIA’S EFFORT
PRAISED BY U.S. ADMIRAL„ CO-OPERATION WITH U.S.A, GOOD. NEW YORK, November 24. The “Christian Science Monitors” Washington correspondent says: The Chief of the United States Navy Bureau supplies accounts by Rear Admiral Brent Young, after his return from the South Pacific inspection tour. He received co-operation from the’ Australian civil and military officials, exceeding any reasonable expectations. He added; In view of the published private criticisms, he particularly studied the situation at the Australian docks where labour difficulties allegedly caused delay. He was satisfied the Australian stevedore was delivering more work daily despite the rest period for tea, than the American stevedore.; Rear Admiral Young also said he did not know the grounds for the assertions that General MacArthur was having “coalition difficulties.” He further declared he recognised the ’ political difficulties in removing Australia’s ban on oversea service, but felt the removal would be an important gain. He expressed admiration for Mr Curtin’p courage, in initiating the matter.
The “Monitor” comments: Admiral Young's favourable views on Australia’s efforts helped to readjust Washington opinion on that subject •after a heavy swing to the critical side, due to the coincidental combination of circumstances and reports
