Dr Shore, Deputy Director of Health, is visiting the hospital on Monday next in connection with the new laundry and out-patients’ block, and also the extension of steam from the boilerhouse to the laundry. The Department of Health advised that it was intended to resume the post graduate course for nurses next year, also that owing to relatively high cost of converting into a maternity home the Westport-Stockton Coal Company’s premises at Nvakawau, which the board had proposed to purchase, the department does not approve of the proposal and considers the board would be better advised to proceed, with plans for the erection of, a new maternity hospital. It was therefore decided to notify the WestportStockton Coal Co. that the board is unable to finalise the purchase of their property. Mr J. Dowgray moved and Mr J’. Ward seconded, that the board take steps to obtain a suitable section at Granity and proceed with the 1 erection there of a new maternity hospital. The chairman agreed that the expenditure of £4OOO on a z 38-year-old building was not a good proposition when a new hospital could be- provided at a cost of £6OOO. The resolution was carried unanimouslv. At a special meeting of the Ratepayers’ Association it was resolved that the executive be given power to operate on the association’s funds up to the limit of £5 for any exigency. The chairman stated that the rules should be added to, as there was no provision for the disposal of the funds in the event of the association going out of existence. It was resolved that in the event of the association becoming defunct distribution of the funds in hands be decided at a meeting called for the purpose. It was decided to hold a social evening In the Elite Tea Rooms
