SECRETARY CHARGED. AUCKLAND, November 24. A plea of not guilty was entered by Mr King on . behalf of William Opie. Secretary of the New Zealand Rugby League Old Boys’ Association, who was charged before Mr J. Morling, S.M.I with selling liquor without a license. i Sub-Ihspector Macnamara said dei fendant was the secretary of a club of about 700 members and about 500 dozen bottles of beer were purchased every month. Each member made his order through the secretary. The club paid 16s 6ct a dozen, for the beer and it was sold to the members for 24s a dozen, the profit going to the Club’s funds. Mr King submitted that selling meant a legal sale by some person. who had a propertv in the liquor, to some other person. There was a distinction between selling and supplying. Defendant was only the agent or servant of the club. Decision was reserved. Charges of selling liquor in the nolicence district of Grey Lynn, or having ten dozen quart bottles of ale delivered to the district without notifying the vendor that he was resident there, and of keeping liquor for sale in. a no-licence area, were admitted by Sydney Albert Mclsaack. On the first charge defendant was fined £5O, and oh the second charge he was fined £lO and was convicted and discharged on the third count.
