BETTER SUGAR RATIONS

Reserve Stocks NOT ABNORMAL p.A. WELLINGTON. Nov. 25. Since, the announcement of the reinstatement of the twelve ounce ration of sugar per coupon, and the announcement that additional allowance of three pounds per person would be made in December for jam making, it had been suggested, by certain persons that huge reserves of sugar were being held in New Zealand, Hon. D. G. Sullivan said tonight. This was entirely incorrect. The sugar stock nosition had given considerable anxiety in recent months and everv endeavour had been made to build 'up stocks to meet normal requirements. With the' restricted shipping facilities, he said, this policy was sound and prudent. It allowed a reasonable margin of safety, and permitted a satisfactory dispersal of stocks throughout the Dominion. Special reserves that were held, in addition to the normal requirements, would provide only three weeks’ supply on the present ration basis. Mr Sullivan said that he hoped to be able to announce, before the end of the year, that a further supply of sugar for jam making would be made available during the fruit season. This would depend on shipping.
