Mr James Hutton, formerly of Grevpiouth, has retired from the rectorship of the Gisborne High School, a' position which he had occupied since 1932. Member's of the Boaid of Governors paid high tribute- to Mr Hutton’s services, and the question of appointing a successor if the Government approved his retirement was referred to a sub-committee.

Motions of sympathy with the relatives of the .late Hon. J. Goodall, M.L.C, and the late Mr. K. Bain, a former member of the- Board were passed at last evening’s meeting ot the Greymouth Fire Board. Motions of sympathy with Mr. P. C. Heaphv in the death of his mother and with Mr. E. J. Rundle in the death of his son-in-law were also carried.

An official announcement of awards to R.A.F. commanders in the Middle East states: Air Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder becomes Grand Commander of the Bath. Air Marshal Arthur Conyngham is made K.C.B. Air Vice-Marshals Keith Rodney Park, formerly of New' Zealand and H. Slatter are awarded the K.B.E. Air Vice-Marshal Graham Dawson becomes a Commander of the Bath.

The Public Passenger Transport Association has elected the following officers: Chairman, Mr W. J. Walter (Christchurch; Deputy-chairman and secretary, Mr H. E. Jarman (Christchurch) Executive. Messrs W. J. Gaudin (Wellington), J. W. Darby (New Plymouth), W. H.. MacKenzie (Dunedin), A. E. Ford (Auckland), and W. J. Rogers (Wanganui). The next conference will be held in Christchurch.

The death occurred suddenly at 7.30 last evening at his residence, 23 Alexander Street, of Mr Henry (Hope) Marshall, a well-known resident of Greymouth. A native of Victoria, 76 years of age, the late Mr Marshall prior to coming 26 years ago to New Zealand, was a stationmaster in the service of the Victorian Railway Department. After spending eleven years at Christchurch, he cam e in 1927 to - Greymouth where he had since resided. He is survived by his wife, and leaves a family of seven, there being three daughters, Mesdames F. C. Foster (Christ-<-hurch), A. C. Thurlow and J. G. Mclntosh (Greymouth): while the sons are Melville (Australia), Bryce (overseas with N.Z.E.F.), Balfour (Greymouth.) and Maxwell (at military camp). He is also survived by five brothers, John (Christchurch), Charles (Oamaru) and three residing in Australia, and by one sister residing in Australia. The relatives will have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their sudden bereavement.
