ADMIRAL CALLAGHAN

REQUIEM MASS AT AUCKLAND.

P.A. ' AUCKLAND, November 24. . The hero of the American naval victory in the Solomons, Rear-Ad-miral Daniel J. Callaghan, was honoured this morning, when Solemn Requiem Mass was sunk in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the presence of an overflowing congregation which included contingents of American servicemen, senior U.S. naval and military officers, Mr A. S. Richards, M.P., representing the Prime Minister, the Consular Corps, and representatives of public bodies. Mass was

celebrated by Rev. Father Gallagher, SJ. United States Naval Chaplain. Bishop Liston, who presided, said in his address that the deed of courage which brought Admiral Callaghan’s life to its close was no act of sudden daring. A hero was not made in ah hour, but in long* years before, whilst nobility and strength were being grafted! on his soul. Such an act of sacrifice for the sanctities of the home and the protection of the country and of all the things that were good and true in the world was the highest use a man could make of his’ life. “We revere in our hearts and in; prayer the memory of the Admiral, his officers, and men who died for us, and make a resolve to keep in our souls the inspiration of thair deeds.”
