Sgmn. J. Parrish of Reefton, is visiting Hokitika, and is spending a lew’ days with his sister, Mrs Wastney. ' Pte. J. O’Rourke is at present home on sick leave. Mr Shields, of Kanieri, left on Monday for South Westland. Mr Cooper, assistant clerk at the Borough Office, who has been on a holiday visit to th e North Island, will return at the week-end. Messrs N. D. Bowman and W. E. Olds, who were visitors on Tuesday left in the afternoon for Greymouth. Mr P. Martin left for Christchurch on Tuesday morning. Sgt. F. Freitas returned on Tuesday morning from military camp. Mr H. Dunn, of Rimu. left on Tuesday morning on a visit to Christchurch.

Mr A. Couch is at present on a visit to Christchurch. Mr H. Wild, a former well known Hokitika man, and son of the late Mr R. H. Wild and Mrs Wild of Bealey Street, who was manager of the South British Insurance Company in Hong Kong prior to the outbreak of war, is at present a prisoner. Writing to his mother Mr Wild stated ihat he is interned along with 3000 other British, American and Dutch civilians. He states: “No money, minimum clothes, footwear, and so on, but never down-hearted. I am very well, if streamlined, but perhaps the better for it, Time passes quickly enough, though I would prefer working to doing nothing.” At a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Wataroa this week, the following cases were dealt with by Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M.: For lacking a driving license Philip W. Nolan and James Minehan were each fined 20s with costs, and Frank Gunn was fined 10s with costs. For not having warrants of fitness, Frederick Pamment and J'oseph L. Martini were fined 10s with costs, while Alfred Chinn, Michael Sullivan junr., and Thomas C. O’Neil were each ordered to pay costs. For driving an unlicensed motor truck Alfred J. Chinn was fined £2 and costs. Against Hans H. Busch, of Bruce Bay, there were two charges of allowing cattle to wander. On the first charge he was convicted and on the second charge he was ordered to pay 10s costs and witnesses’ expenses amounting to 355.
