BOROUGH OF GREYMOUTH

The Greymouth Borough Council at 'its monthly meeting adopted a recommendation of the Works Committee that the necessary steps be taken to make applicable a by-law whereby the annual charge for the removal of nightsoil from premises be. fixed at 25s per annum outside the area in which water closets may be fixed and operated, and 35s per annum within that area.

The Mayor said that the Council was disappointed at the slowness with which pan closets were being abolished in the sewer area. After taking into consideration the costs, a higher rate for the nightsoil service in the sewer area had been fixed. The pan closets should be got rid of in that area. The higher rate would apply only to the sewer area. The Engineer’s report stated that one pan closet had been eliminated during the month. Further recommendations of the Works Committee were:—That the resolution fixing the terms upon which advances may be made to those requiring financial assistance under the Sewerage Advances Loan be amended to provide (1) that the 5 per cent, supervision charge be deleted and that the appropriate Sanitary Permit fee be charged in lieu thereof; (2) that the rate of interest be reduced from 6 to, 5 per cent, per annum on the outstanding balance; (3) that these amendments apply immediately, and (4). that existing contracts be adjusted retrospectively in accordance with these amendments by credit to the account of the party concerned. That the Gospel Hall at th =. corner of Cardwell and Fox Streets be improved fcr use as an E.P.S. First Aid Station by a piping tne open drain on Fox Street opposite the. Fox Street frontage of the property; (b) laying a 4“ E.W. drain to remove waste waters from the building; (c) making a footpath across the section at the rear entrance and (d) making gate through the fence along Fox Street opposite the above mentioned oath, the total estimated cost being £25 without allowance for the filling of the existing open drain. That conditional upon the owner of the property providing the material required, tne Council undertake the erection of a fence not exceeding three feet in height along the Petrie Avenue frontage of the property on the eastern side at the intersection of Tarapuhi Street and Petrie Avenue, the fence to be connected to that existing in Tarapuhi Street so as to cut off the corner for a distance of .18 feet from the present corner of the section at Petrie Avenue and that street.

A further report by the Works Committee was adopted confirming the appointment of Mr W. L. Curtis as working woFks foreman. The report stated that a second meeting had been held to consider the matter as the application of Mr J. Griffen, had, through an oversight, not been placed in the hands of the committee earlier. Mr Kent voted against the adoption of the report, questioning whether the committee had been unanimous, and stating that the matter in this case should have been referred to the full Council.

The Engineer’s report stated: — The sidling roadway in Fox Street where it drops down the terrace at Clifford Street has been completed. At the intersection of Raleigh and Cowper Streets the latter has been widened as to metalled width to improve traffic conditions. At the intersection of Blake and Robinson Streets standard crossings over the water tables on the curves have been put in. Th e first cutting of grass in streets is in progress. The continuation of the 9” Ashton Lane sewer to connect with main sewer in Johnston Street has been completed. Winnie Street sewer which for some time has given considerable trouble, was opened up and an obstruction removed, but further opening is necessary. Likewise, portion of the Shakespeare Street sewer mav have to be opened up. The storm water channel which passes from the vicinity of the recent slip in Tindale Road,' through Dr. Mackay’s, the Kettle Estates and Mr J. W. Greenslade’s properties into Kilgpur Road has been piped through the latter property and manholes are under construction. For this work the property owners are bearing the cost of materials used on their respective properties.
