In reply to representations that Home Guardsmen who use their own cars in attending parades he supplied with petrol free of charge, the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) states that it has now been decided that members of the Home Guard unable to reach training centres in a reasonable time on foot shall be allowed to render alternative service, in the form of camp training. This will be held at times of the year suitable to local conditions.

A drive- for books and magazines for distribution to military camps was conducted by the Greymouth Boy Scouts, on Saturday. Details of the material collected were given bv the Scoutmaster (Mr G. W. Russell) last night and are as follows: Stiff cover novels 760, paper-back novels 336. digests 61, assorted magazines 672; total 1829. Books not suitable for distribution totalled 182. Mr Russell said, however, that for the most, part the material received was of a good type-, and he considered that the drive had been a successful one.

Between £35 and £4O was raised for the Patriotic Fund bv the Military Gymkhana held at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon. The procession was headed by the bands, and included among others the various war service organisations, the Boy’s Brigade, Fire Brigade-, and pupils of the Marist and Convent Schools. A feature of the programme was the display by a special troop of thirty-six army motor-cyclists. This included stuntriding. and a race. Other items on the programme were a mine rescue station demonstration, drill display by the 17th Company and W.W.S.A., and rifle- grenade, mortar and bayonet drill displays. Children’s sports were held, and there were stalls and the usual competitions.
