HOKITIKA, November 22. The Hokitika members of the IH-h. Independent Infantry Company, who are to proceed to camp to-morrow, were the guests of the remaining members at a smoke concert in the Town Hall, over 60 manners being present. Lieut. Silcock (commanding officer), presided, and Lieut. Bowers (commander in Greymoutn) and Sergeant Major Gladstone were also present, also Flying Oificers Baines and Lewis and Aircraftsman Wormington and Stoker Agnew (Navy). Various toasts were honoured, the speakers including those mentioned and Sergeant King, Corporals Havill, Boyd, Paterson, E. Heenan and Rutland; Privates T. Barrett, D. Pfahlert, A. Cumming. Tinnetti, Bryant and Nicol. Items were given by Flying Officer Baines, Privates Cox, Pfahlert, Cumming, Fowler, Messrs D. McGill and G Bowman, and Sergt. Brown led community singing. A chiming pewter cup, trophv lor the unity five hundred cards championship was presented to Pvts. P. Tinnetti (captain) and Nicol. It was staFed that the unit wished the trophy to go wherever the members went, and Corporal Boyd would have charge of further competitions for it. An illuminated address was. presented along with the cup. Sergt. A. King was presented with a leather holdall and soldier’s mirror. Lt. Silcock said that Sergt. King was the fourth Sergeant to leave the unit. The Mayor and members of the Borough Council took an opportunity to farewell Corporal S. Havill (who was Chairman of the Works Committee). The Mayor, Mr A. R. Elcock, presented him with a fountain pen, and tributes to him were paid bv Crs. C. Caliari. T. W. Duff, W. H. Stopforth, D. P. Stuart, L S. Ross, Corporals K. Aitken and E. Heenan, and Mr 11. Coles (Town Clerk). Corporal Hav-. ill in reply, said he had been a member of the Independent Infantry Company since July, and was pleased that he was a fit man able to carry his share of the burden. Although he was married with a family, it was not his wish that others, should do his share.

Al the Hospital Board’s monthly meeting Sister 1 T. White, Matron of the Casualty Hospital at Jackson Bay, tendered iter resignation, whicn was accepted with regret; The' Medical Association at Jackson Eaj r advised that a credit, of £S remained, and ii would not be able to carry on, as lite membership had decreased to 45. Aeroplane ambulance charges were a big drain, the cost of' transport, from Haast being £2O, and £l5 from the Bay. Only older men are now at Jackson Bay, and consequently more sickness was being experienced. The Association had to find 6s per day per patient in the casualty hospital. As the Association could not see its way clean to meet these obligaton, the facts were placed before the board for their consideration. Th? chairman said the Association always had played its part, and now it was for the board to discuss the problem with the committee of the Association and Health Department with a view to doing the best for the people at j'ackson Bay. N.Z. Registered Nurses’ Association wrote asking for adoption of suggested minimum salary scale.—Deferred until estimates are considered. When considering the salary scale of the nursing staff it was reported that the board was paying a h'gh scale for an institution of its class. Williams’s Medical Hall wrote asking for additional payment for dispensing.—Contract to be reviewed al suggested rates on month to month basis. The financial statement showed receipts £3182 Os 4d, expenditure £2366 16s lid. Accounts amounting to £2329 3s Id wire passed for payment. The Medical Superintendent’s; report stated: Remaining in hospital 30/9/42 64. admitted during October 1942 100, total treated during October 164, remaining in hospital October 31. 78. The Matron's import stated: Number of operations 38, X-rays 72, massage 280. Highest number of occupied bed 85, lowest 64, average for month 75. Sister Minehan had res'gned. The purchase of furniture was left to the chairman of the Finance Committee and secretary. Mr Justice Northcroft wrote thanking the board for care and attention
