APPEAL BOARD

GREYMOUTH SITTING The No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board sat in Greymouth yesterday. Mr W. Meldrum presided and with him were Messrs P. J. O’Regan and A. Panther. Mr C. F. Shapcott was secretary. This week’s sitting will be for three days. • The District Public Works Engineer (Mr E. F. Evans) appealed tor the following: John William Weaver, foreman; Lawrence George Kremmer, platelayer; Marvin Dudley Duncan, carpenter; Gilbert Joseph Beynon, foreman; John Dudley Keenan, lorry driver; Norman Grierson Bell, fitter; Ernest Cyril Batt, bush-man-carpenter; Leslie George White, bridgehand; John White, fitter; Arthur Ernest Rochford, surfaceman; George James Robinson, grader driver; Herbert Wayland Pettengill, tractor operator; Clarence Eric Mitchell, bridge carpenter; Lawrence Timothy Magee, skilled labourer. —All adjourned sine die. John Edwin Kyle, record clerk; lan Elder, clerk in charge; John Gavin Smart, senior accounts clerk. —Held over.

An appeal for James Bartholomew Dowell, surfaceman, was adjourned for review in three months. John Edwin West and Stanley Tuckey Watson, linesmen, were appealed for by the Resident Electrical Engineer (Mr A. E. Davenport).—Adjourned sin e die. James Edward Sara, labourer and crane driver was appealed for by* the Workshops’ Foreman of the Railway Department (Mr E. Lattimer). —Adjourned sine die. Alexander Robert Lindbom was appealed for by the Dispatch Foundry Co., Ltd. (Mr W. P. Hambleton) and the Cobden Volunteer Fire Brigade.—Adjourned for review in three months.

An appeal by th e same company for Desmand Ronald Hart, apprentice engineer, was adjourned sine die. The P. and T. Department appealed for James Henry Herring and Gorge Todd, linesmen. —Adjourned sine die.

Frederick Walter Wright and Alex. Bowkett, dairy- factory attendants, were appealed for by the Golden Coast Co-operative Dairy Co. <Mr E. W. Miller, secretary). Wright was a general factory hand in the Reefton factory. He wrote protesting against the appeal, stating that he had no children and was prepared to go to camp and allow a married man with children to stay behind. Mr Miller stated that no replies had been received to advertisements inserted in all the papers. Bowkett was employed' at the Greymouth factory and was experienced in many branches of the work. He was an assistant buttermaker and held a second-class steam certificate. He could also take over the cream lorry in an emergency. The factory • was fully manned.—Both appeals were adjourned sine die. The release from camp of David James Pitman, farmer, was asked for by his father, J’. Pitman. Mr A. M. Jamieson stated that Pitman was in bad health and would have to reduce his farm output considerably if his son were not released. The- Primary Production Council wrote supporting his release. A doctor’s certificate produced, stated that appellant was unable to do full work. To Mr O’Regan appellant stated that his son was capable of taking full charge of the farm.—Release from camp till March 31, was recommended. Horace Anderson was appealed for by Duncan McLean Ltd. Anderson was a member of the Cobden Volunteer Fire Brigade. Mr L. McGlashan secretary to the company, stated that, they were a wholesale firm covering a large area. Anderson had been employed by them for 20 years, and was the' only' member of the staff having a complete understanding of customs, sales tax and important, control. The company was already working -short-Landed, ihavjng lost, both senior and junior members; and there was no one suitable for training in the work which Anderson did —Adjourned sine die. The Dispatch Foundry Co., Ltd. (Mr W. P. Hambleton) appealed for Richard Arnold Ramsey, Raymond Richard Poschich and Robert Alma Carr. —All adjourned sine die. At the afternoon session of-llm board appeals were dealt with as follows (name of reservist first, with name of the party lodging the appeal in parenthesis):— J'ohn Henry V. Brailsford, clerk (Cobden Volunteer Fire Brigade and Grev Electric Power Board). Mr W. S. McClymont, secretary of the board gave evidence of the essential nature 'of Brailsford’s work in view of the loss of staff. Mr Shapcott said that Brailsford had 15 years’ service in the Cobden Volunteer Fire Brigade.—Adjourned sine die. J Athol Winton Adams, electrician

Bunt said that since the appeal was last heard he had secured a man to replace the reservist but hp could not come till January and a postponement of service till that 1 time was sought. Reservist had been accepted for the Navy—Service postponed till January 31. . Frederick E. W. Stratford, winchman (Maori Gold Ltd, represented by Mr A. M. Jamieson). Mr D. Caitn- . ness said that reservist was doing | both welding, and winching.—Adjourned sine die. . David Corrielius Jellie, electrical | superintendent (Gold Mines of N.Z., Ltd.). —Adjourned sine die. Tofe George Anisy, matman (Barrytown Gold Dredging Co.).—Adjourned for three months for review. Alan Douglas Singer, (winchman (Arahura Dredging Co.). —Adjourned sine die. , . Thomas Edward Lee, shore foreman, John Charles Peter Muir, welder, Gerhard Leslie Selby, general labourer, Albert Edwin Thomas, metallurgist, Andrew John Heveldt, greaser and stackerman. —All adjourned sine die, except the appeal for Heveldt, who was stated to be a Grade I single man called for overseas. In his case service was postponed for two months. Mr W J’. Ellis gave evidence lor Gold Mines of N.Z., Ltd., and the Arahura, Kanieri and Barrytown Gold Dredging Companies George Sansom, clerk (Greymouth Motors, Ltd.). Sansom was stated by Mr W. E. J. Steer to be employed as an accountant. The office staff bad been reduced to him and one girl 4 large number- of firms and public bodies were serviced by the organisation—Adjourned sme die. Leslie Scott Robertson, chemist (reservist’s appeal). Appellant referred to the shortage of chemists in the Dominion. Mr Shapcott said that the apoe-al had been referred to the Director of Pharmacy, who stated that reservist’s military appeal should be held up until he was called up in his professional capacity under the system in operation—Adjourned sine die. John .Gavin Malcolmson, service car driver (A. B. Spiers). Mi\ Spiers said that the position was the same as when the appeal was last heard.

Percy George ’ Veale, fisherman (West‘Coast Fish Supply Co.). Reservist, in evidence, said that he was Grade I, married with two children. He was part owner of the company and was operating a fishing boat. The anpeal was supported by theShip Owners’ Federation, reservist being a member of the Seamen’s Union. All fishermen belonged to the Union, and were, to a certain extent tinder naval control. —Adjourned sine die. Herbert William Beams, electrical engineer (R. F. Woodhouse). Mr Woodhouse said that Beams was now 1 a qualified journeyman. The firm had increased its volume of work, as it had taken over industrial work. —Adjourned sine die, an intimation being given that every step should be taken to replace reservist. John Albert Essex, railway worker (appeal on grounds of undue hardship bv Mrs C. Essex and reservist). Reservist’s father said that Mrs Essex and himself were not in good health. The reservist assisted financially. They did not wish the son to go overseas while they were not in good health, and asked for restriction Io service in New Zealand.— Dismissed subject to service not being outside New Zealand, the appeal to be reviewed at any time. Alexander Mairs. slaughterman (Greymouth Borough Council, represented bv Mr J. W. Hannan) William Hughes, Greymouth Abattoir Manager, gave evidence of difficulty in securing staff for the work. Reservist was in the first aid section of the E.P.S. at Runanga.—Adjourned sine die. • • . , , John Alexander Hudson, assistant County Clerk (Grey County Council). Mr Hannan .gave evidence as a member of the council. He stated that when Hudson was appointed he. was the only suitable applicant.— It was thought that his medical grading would make him not required for military service. He was now the only male on the executive office staff, where formerly there were three. —Adjourned sine die. _ Bernard Kenneth Traill, cabinetmaker (H. E. Traill). Mr W. D. Taylor, appearing for the case, said that reservist was now working tor the Mines Department. The Department wished to adopt ths- appeal. This was granted.
