TRAINING FOR COMMISSIONS.

Many members of the N.Z.V.R. wjio have served on warships accompanying convoys To Russia and Malta are now in the officers’ training ship, H.M.S. “King Alfred,” taking commissions. Mr W. J.- Jordan has visited this officers’ training ship. He met ninety-one New Zealanders. He learned from Captain N. J. Pelly, C.BE., commanding officer, that a very high opinion was held of them, and" also that a group of New Zealanders invariably secure the highest average of marks of all the Empire’s entrants in psychological and intelligence tests. Hundreds of New Zealanders have now been in the “King Alfred.” Mr Jordan addressed those present, and paid a tribute to’Captain Pelly for the interest he had taken in them. He hoped Captain Pelly would visit the Dominion after 1 the war, when he would be assured of the warmest welcome.

Mr Jordan was accompanied by Mr S. R. Skinner (Naval Liaison Officer). and Lieut.-Colonel R. S HaUtwell, of Auckland (Military Liaison Officer). They spent a dav visiting the ship’s branches. ' The following were among -those met:—Cadets T. F. Southel, J. L. Caelin (Wellington) and P. B. Philpott (Palmerston North), who arc survivors from H.M.S. “Edinburgh”: B. S? Heal of Wellington (survivor of H;M.S. “Trinidad”). Both the “Edinburgh” and the “Trinidad” were sunk in a convoy to Russia. Other cadets were:—D. P. Black and F. G. Barnes (Wellington); F. A. Bishop and H. F. W. Bruorton (Christchurch); F„ Bamford (Stratford); E. H. Blair (Wainukurau) and D. C. Campbell (Dunedin), who served on the cruiser “Kent.”

Cadets J. Guinney, W. G. Holder, L. C. Rice (Wellington); D. S. Hart (Feilding); G K. Natusch (Napier); and J. Lewin (Palmerston „North) who served in a destroyer in the Russian and Malta convoys.

Cadets H. I’. Anderson (Wellington), A. W. Worth (Auckland), who served on another destroyer on the Russian convoy, were 1 also met, along with cadets S. Burley (Gisborne), T. K. Fallwoll (Waihl), B. A. Hunter .(Helensville) and T. M, Sunderland (Havelock North), who wffi'e in a destroyer on a, Malta convoy. Cadets D. F. Burton, T. I. Bourke, L. G. Carr and D. C. Wilson (of Wellington),. were mot. They served in a new destroyer convoying the West Africa and Scapa, and once narrowly missed sinking a U-boat. Cadets W. R. Lloyd (New Plymouth) and M. Maginnitv (Nelson), were met, and stated they served in the former African destroyer “Salisbury;” also cadets D. J. McMillan and P. J. Lawrenco (Christchurch), I-I. S. Read (Wellington), P. L. Bardwell (Auckland), and K. A. Williamson (Dunedin), who served in the sloop “Stork;” cadets M. R. Mepham (Wanganui.), and G. Gibbs (Taumarunui), who served in the “Illustrious”; cadets P. R. Forrester (Wanganui), J. F. Ingram (Petone)'and L. A. Powell (Christchurch), who served in a warship at. Madagascar; cabets V. M. A. McNaughton (Lyttelton), who served in a craft landing troops at Madagascar; cadet L. E. Hodge (Palmerston North), who was at Dieppe in the destroyer; cadet E. W. Redman (Hamilton) who was in a destroyer on Russian and Malta - ' convoys, cadet J. D..Helmor P (Takapuna), who was in a rescue motor launch, picking up members of the R.AF. from the English Channel, cadet E. H. Luke (Napier), who was in the “Victorious.” Cadet K. E. Lipanovic (Kaitangata), who was torpedoed twice in three months, first In . the “Trinidad” and then thp “Foresight” was also met. He told Mr Jordan: “I.
