(Our Own Correspondenr.?

Mr. and Mrs. J. Weir, Wataroa, who are visiting Mr. and Mrs. D. Weir, Main Road, have been delayed here owing to the wash-out at the Lower Wanganui bridge, Westland. Mr. Weir is employed at the sawmill at Wataroa. Mrs. Hill of Christchurch, has been visiting her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs Mayne, Edwin Street. She has left on her'return. While here she was 'accompanied by her sister, Mrs. E. Mac Neill, Cobden. Mr. J. MacDonald, Brodie Street, has left for Christchurch to consult a specialist regarding an eye injury. I regret to report the removal of Mr. C. Hall, to the Grey Hospital and trust the treatment will do him good, and enable him to return at an early date. Mrs. W. McKnight, of Auckland is on a visit to the township and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. MacGregor, Hilton Street. ' ' 1 ’! The annual meeting of the Blackball branch of the Housewives’ Union was held in the Miners’ Union office on Tuesday evening, Mrs. MacGougan presiding over a fair attendance. The President gave ah outline of branch activities during the past year, and was heartily thanked for her address. Letters of s”mpathy were sent to Mesdames Driscoll and Lee, regretting the fact that their respective sons ha'd been placed on the “nrssing list” on active service, and expressing the hope that they would turn up as prisoners of war. The election of officials for the ensuing vear resulted as follows: President, Mrs 'E. MacDonald, (Mrs. MacGougan'declined nomination); Vica-Presi-dent, Mrs. J. M. Park; Secretary Mrs. F. Mason; Treasurer, Mrs. M. Pirrie: Committee: Mesdames Philip, Rarity, MacGougan, Allen, P. Meikle, Whiting, Murdoch and Aylward. The outgoing president and other officials were heartily thanked for their services during their term of office. The Wardens of the local E.P.S. met at Mr. Walden’s on Tuesday to perfect arrangements for a' “drive” for funds in aid of a trailer-pump for fire fighting purposes. It was agreed to start the drive around November 7, after the E.P.S'. ball. Collectors were appointed for the various zones, and they will be responsible for a complete canvass of their particular d’strict. For a township of this size the trailer pump is a most essential apparatus. The committee are looking forward to a bumper collection. Let me remind all wellwishers of the E.P.S. ball which will be held in the Miners’ Hall on Saturday. November- 7, suggesting that thev" trv by everv means to make Blackball their “Mecca” for that night. It is going to be a great ball and all will retain the pleasant memory of it for many a day.
