HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.' HOKITIKA, October 29. Mr T. P. O’Neil, County Chairman, will visit Christchurch next week, following his visit to South Westland, to examine recent flood damage, which is reported to have included considerable loss of live stock. Until a cage over the Big Wanganui River has been constructed by th.e Public Works Department, passengers will we ferried across, 35 having yesterday being thus transported. Cattle which in the past week have been purchased in numbers in South Westland will be driven to Ross, whence they will be railed to market. Private C. Davidson is at present spending leave with his mother. Mrs Davidson of Bealev StreetRecently an officer of the Air Force visited the local schoof seeking recruits to undertake the cadet air training course. Already some of the pupils have. partly completed the course. and arp keenly interested h> the Air Force.

Rev. Father Dale. Chaplain to the Armed Forces, was a visitor to Hokitika this week, and left on his return this morning. Mr Chinn of South Westland, was a visitor to Hokitika to-dav. Mr T. Stuart of Hokitika, Is at present a natient at Westland Hospital Seven boxes of whitebait arrived .to-day from the Mahatahi River Bruce Bav, and were forwarded to Christchurch, the first supplies for many davs, which should command a good price at the market. The Marine Department wrote, giving approval to the new periods of eclipse and flash for the leading light at the signal station. Mr Mark Wallace forwarded details of- the arrangements for the freighting of benzine cargoes to Hokitika. Members expressed the wish that the whole of the cargoes, as arranged, would come through the port, as the Board had done its part in fixing charges to meet the change m the hope that the amounts specified would some through the port. Signalman G Howe reported that a big flood had scoured the river for three davs but no damage was sustained. and bar conditions had been improved. The Treasurer reported receipts as £543 12s Id, and paymentsas £344 18s 9d: with a credit at bank on September 30,. of £485 Is 3d.. Tile Harbours’ Association advised that statistics as to centralisation of shipping would not be required from Hokitika.
