HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.' HOKITIKA, Oct. 20. By radio message from Jackson Bay to Wellington and thence to Hokitika to-day, Mr. Nolan of Okuru, advised the local police that Alexander Noble, had been missing since Saturday and was believed to have been drowned. He had been engaged m whitebait fishing in the Waitoto Rivsr on Saturday, and had not been seen since. A. search is being made, bu. so far Ivithout avail Constable McEachern, stationed at Bruce Bay, left for Okuru by plane, but so far has not reported to the local police as to whether there have been further tidings of the missing man. Noble is about 35 years of age, and a member of a well-known family o. Blue Spur. His wife and two children reside in Arthurstown. He left home a couple of months ago to go whitebaiting at Okuru. Except by radio, news from the far south is slow to obtain, as the telephone circuit is out of commission. There was a good attendance at the Koiterangi Women’s Institutes monthly meeting, presided over by Mrs. Dimmick, when Mrs. W. Little was elected as delegate to the Federation meeting at Kumara' on October 30. Mrs. E. Smith was in charge of the “wandering shilling.’’ Mrs. Fleming and D. Smith conducted a “bring and buy,” showing a profit of 9s 6d The roll call “My Oldest Possession,” (to be displayed) was very interesting, and caused a great deal of amusement. Mrs. Little paraded in a frock with a feathered boa, beads, mittens and handbag worn over 50 years ago. Next came a tiny tot, Jocelyn Lindsay, wearing a heavily-embroidered pinafore, worn over 40 years ago. Another roll call “My Favourite Breakfast pish” was very well responded to. Quite a number of knitted articles were handed in for soldiers. Competition winners were: Best polyanthus, Mrs. Jack Michel 1, Mrs. A. S. Havill 2, Mrs. Dimmick 3 breakfast cup of flowers, Mrs. J. Michel 1, Mrs H. Michel 2, Miss S. Havill 3. An “aeroplane spin” was held over until a. later date. The hostesses were Mrs. A. Jones and Mrs. Ferm , At Arahura Valley Womens Institute meeting, visitors from Kumara were welcomed by the President, Mrs. Cunningham. Mrs. Clark read the aspirations. The motto for the month was, “Using Lime without Manure makes both Garden and Gardener poor.” Soldiers’ parcels were reported to have been posted, wit satisfaction expressed as to tneii qualitv. Mrs Dalglish was appoin ed delegate to the Federation meeting. Following- were competition results: Biscuits, Mrs Dalglish 1, Mrs. Clark 2, Melva Bradley 3. Primroses, Mrs. Cunningham 1, Mrs. Finch 2. .Mrs. Fensom gave a demonstration with a modern spinning wheel, and exhibited articles of clothing made with one, two, and three-ply wool. She also exhibited cotton crochet lace' gloves. During the social half hour, Melva Bradley gave a song. Mesdames Ready and Martin won game competitions. . A garden party in aid of the patriotic funds held on Saturday at the Nurses’ Horde, Sea View Mental Hospital, was most enjoyable and successful, and resulted in £54 15s 2d being raised. Competition winners were: Baby show (under 6 months) Joselyn Keen; 6 to 12 months, Clive Mclntosh; 12 to 18 months, Loraine and Diana Jack; 18 months to 2 years, Ursula McGeorge; trophy, Dr. Bellringer; cordials, Miss Carroll; duchess set, Mrs. B. L. Wilson; cushion, Mr. W. P. McGrath (South Beach); men’s slippers, Mrs. Daly (Rangiora). The Hokitika Borough Council met on Monday evening. Present: The Mayor, (Mr. A. R. Elcock) Crs. J. K. Aitken, S. Havill,. W. H. Stopforth, G Heinz D. P. Stuart. T. W. Duff, C. Callari. L S. Ross ard E. W. Heena'n. The Town Clerii reported that 67 per cent of the rates had been paid within the rebate period, payments being ahead of last year. The action of Cr. Stopforth in soliciting the assistance of the Westland County Council towards the cost of the upkeep of the cemetery was approved, and the Reserves Committee were empowered to meet representatives of the County Council to discuss a working arrangement. Cr. Havill (Chairman of Works Committee), was given authority to proceed with the grading of Weld Street, also Tapcred Street (from Perry’s corner to Renton’s corner) for sealing, and to arrange

for the grading back of all streets. Consideration was given to the installation of a large tar boiling plant, and arrangements were left to a sub committee. The Mayor was appointed to the local Transport Board. Members asked for a report to be tabled for the next meeting and mentioned rumours that all local carrying firms would have to use horse drawn vehicles,' and .that already some firms had been advised that they could not undertake certain works with their lorries. Other motor lorries were to be seen distributing goods in tne town area After discussion it was decided to' await the report of the Mayor, who stated that he had not yet been invited to attend a meeting. If the facts were as stated, Councillors said, firms who had grown up with the town or been in business here for many years should receive every consideration. Where horse drawn vehicles were used, it was stated, there was no need for Board control. An application to sub-divide a section on Gibson’s Quay was held over as the area was not in the Borough Council’s jurisdiction, and Ministerial consent was required. Auckland Surbuban Local Bodies wrote in regard .to increasing payments to Hospital Board. No action was taken as the position did not arise in Hokitika. Accounts amounting to £1,455 9s 6d were passed for payment. Abbattoir fees for the month amounted to £79 Is Id.

At the annual meeting of the Hokitika Tennis Club the following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. F. B. Lewis; President, Mr. C. Guthrie; Vice Presidents, Mrs Michel, Dr. Aitken, Dr. Bellringer and all last year’s Vice Presidents; Captain, Mr. C. Brooking;Vice Captain, Mrs. Lewis; Secretary, Miss 0. Stapleton; Treasurer, Mr. J. Butland; Committee: Misses J. Stevenson, L. Sherman, R. Anderson, Mrs. Guthrey, Mrs. Cowdry, Mr. Coxhill and all officers Labour Day was chosen for opening day. Subscriptions were fixed at: Ladies 27s bd; men 37s 6d; juniors 7s 6d. In the ladies’ golf matches at Mahinapua Links, Mrs. Neilsen won the C grade medal match with a score of 101-28-73 Other cards being: Mrs. Preston, 100-26-74; Miss Eastgate, 106-16-90; Miss J. Wormington, 111-16-95. Mrs Preston won the October-C. grade bogey match with a score of 1 down. Reductions in handicaps were: Mrs. Preston 26- to 24; Mrs. Neilsen 28-25. Ladies’ Tennent Cup matches resulted: Miss E. Knight 102-30-66. Mrs/ Murdoch 97-29-68; Mrs. Dawe, 94-21-73; Miss E. Dale 101-27-74; Mrs. Tomlinson 110-36-74; Miss Adamson 89-14-75; Mrs. C.
