HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, October 8. Mr T. N. Warren, secretary of the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union, arrived in Hokitika on Saturday evening. Mr Warren, who recently suffered an injury to his ankle, will return to Wellington .at an early date. Aircraftsman Cooper, formerly ot the staff of the Sea View Mental Hospital, is here on leave. Pilot Officer J. McVicar of the Air Force, has returned from overseas and is here looking up old friends. Mr E. Kirby, of Harihari, was a visitor to Hokitika on Wednesday, and returned the same evening.

A number of nurses of Sea View Mental Hospital staff left on Wednesday for the North Island where they will report for duty at another mental hospital, acquired by the Government to house patients who had to be evacuated from Porirua following the earthquake damage. St. Mary's Debating Club team last evening visited Greymouth and were successful in a contest with St. Columba Club. Earlier at the club’s annual banquet, which was numerously attended, prizes were presented as follows: Senior cup, Mr E. J. Allan; Junior cup, Mr S. Davern; most imoroved speakers, Mr W. Toohey (senior), Mr P. Carroll (junior); religious questions, Mr W. Toohey (esnior), Mr P. Carroll (junior); tennis and billiards, Mr D. Nutting i (senior), Mr P. Haussman (junior).) Items were given by Messrs J. Clother (piano solos), P. Stephens (song), Rev. Father Keane (recitation), H. M. Coulcom (monologue), A. Neill (song). L._Wilson (recitation), E. Allan (story), S. Davern (impersonations), P. Crough (banjo solo). Community singing was led by Messrs Lawn (piano) 'and P. Crough (violin). Toasts honoured were: The Pope and the King, the Spiritual Director (Rev. Father Keane); The’ Judges, Club Patron, Absent Friends, Kindred Clubs, the Press, Ladies’ Committee, Junior Members and the Chairman.

The zoning of milk deliveries will possibly commence in Hokitika on November 1. The committee in charge consists of Messrs H. C. Rowe (Postmaster), A. R. Elcock (Mayor) and T. W. Duff. They have been making preliminary arrangements, meetings with the local milkmen having been held. The milkmen will be allocated streets and blocks. The zoning, is expected to effect a saving in tyres and petrol. The warmer weather is welcomed, especially by potato growers. A market gardener planted out 20,000 cabbages this week. Gardens at the Westland and Mental Hospitals are forward, the former including a considerable area of potatoes. Mr McPherson (curator of the Botanic Gardens, Christchurch) will to-morrow give a lecture on vegetable growing at the local Methodist Hall at 8 p.m., and this will be of special interest to gardeners. - The Hokitika River has remained swollen with the melting of snow in the warmer weather. It is hoped the effect of the extra flow will be to facilitate the run of whitebait. • . m Lance Corporal T. Simpson was met at the residence of his parents on his coming of age on Saturday by a gathering of friends and felicitated. Private E. M'. Lakin proposed the health of the guest. A happy evening was spent with dancing, community singing and solo items. , T . At Kanieri Womens Institute meeting Mrs Wells presided. The aspirations were read by Miss Rooney. Competition winners were Miss Morris (best bloom), Miss Wells and Mrs Hall.
