The Director of Naval Recruiting advises that men up to 45 (and in special cases up to 50 years of age, are urgently needed for important shore station work in the Royal N.Z. Navy. Particulars are advertised in this issue.

Two more bales of waste paper were received from business houses at the Town Flail depot yesterday. There is now a total of 15 bales awaiting dispatch and these will probably be railed away next week. Nine hundredweight of waste paper was sold locally.

During the coming week officials of the Greymouth Borough Council will test various warning sirens to be used in the event of an emergency. Two sirens will be tested to-day. In order that citizens may not be misled to think that they, are required for duty, the correct alarm signal will not be sounded.

Appreciation was voiced by the Dominion Executive of the; N.Z-R.S.A. of a decision of the Rationing Controller, Mr Thomas, to approve of the issue of additional clothing coupons to all persons suffering disabilities whereby appliances are required to be worked, thereby causing increased wear and tear on clothing.—P.A.

Four hundred and forty-six appends against military service have been lodged in respect’ of men drawn in the last ballot.. Approximately 660 men were called in the area, which includes Murchison, Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika, so that appeals have been lodged for 67 per cent, of these men. Most of these appeals have been lodged by employers, though there are a few cases of working farmers who have appealed on their own account. In comparison, appeals were lodged for 74 per cent, of the men drawn in the Wellington area. One hundred and forty towns (including fourteen of the eighteen main provincial centres), attained their national savings quotas last week. This is 31 more than. for th? preceding week, and the largest number recorded for some months. Included are a number of places which, after a lapse of several weeks, have again succeeded in attaining their quotas. On June 7, there appeared in New Zealand newspapers a cablegram from London advising the death of Prof. Gilbert Murrav. A resolution of sympathy with the British League of Nations Union, on his loss, was passed bv the Dominion Council, and the Wellington Executive of the L.N.U. and forwarded to the British headquarters. The following ' cablegram was received on Tuesday from Major A. J. Freshwater, Overseas Secretary of the Union: “'Delighted to inform you that Prof. Murray is alive and well, and attended the executive meeting to-day. The number of women police in New Zealand is to be doubled, bringing the total to 20. All are being stat'oned at the four chief centres.' Tnis will increase the number at Auckland and Wellington to six for each place, and at Christchurch and Dunedin to four each. The Dominion Executive of the R.S.A. yesterday issued a statement at Wellington, deploring the fact that the observance of Anzac Dav as a day of memorial should become a bargaining point in award negotiations, before the Arbitration Court. The Executive points out that some awards of the Arbitration Court provide that when Anzac Dav-falls on a Sunday, and Monday, April 26 is also a holidav, then Anzac Day shall be observed on April 27.' A statement that he favoured the establishment of Home Guard training camps was made by the Commandant of the Central Military District, Colonel H. M. Foster. One was in being, he said, and he was awaiting authority to start two more similar camps in the Poverty Bay district.
